H. pylori US Epidemiology

Helicobacter pylori infection is present in 30 to 50 percent of the world’s population.  The Helicobacter pylori infection rate is higher in developing countries, most likely due to poor sanitary conditions. H. pylori infection still affects tens of millions in the United States, where H. pylori prevalence is estimated between 10-20% of the population.

While infection from the helicobacter pylori bacteria is usually acquired in early childhood, the symptoms may not be visible until much later in life.  Fortunately, the overall prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection is decreasing, yet many times, during helicobacter pylori treatment, the infection demonstrates resistance to antibiotics.
