Treating H. pylori

There is no single drug that can effectively eliminate H. pylori. Therefore, a combination of drugs is generally prescribed, usually two types of antibiotics as well as a PPI (proton pump inhibitor). The PPI is used to decrease the stomach's acidity, allowing the inflamed stomach lining to heal. This drug combination is normally referred to as the "Triple Therapy."

The duration of the therapy is usually between 10 to 14 days. There have been studies that show that shorter regimens may be effective, but they have not yet been adapted to routine clinical practice.

In approximately 80% of patients, the treatment is successful. However, if additional treatment is needed, your doctor will prescribe other drugs that have proven to be effective in treating H. pylori infections.
